Jolly Roger Coaster Work in Progress: Part 5, SCULPT COMPLETE!!!
Ladies and scalawags, I can finally call this one done! I'll be making the mold soon and cast the first pulls and see what happens. I'll be casting them in black resin and give it a weathered wash to look like old iron.
"Hoist the colors high!"

Jolly Roger Coaster Work in Progress: Part 4
Almost there! I decided against doing a rope pattern around the perimeter of the coaster and opt instead for a wood pattern. Like most projects I work on, they always evolve in the end.
Jolly Roger Coaster Work in Progress: Part 3
The pirate themed coaster is finally coming around. The perimeter will eventually have a rope pattern going around it (the indents you see on the upper right were from pressing down on a separate coiled element I was test fitting). The wooden planks will have nail heads also. Pretty excited about how it's turning out. Can't wait to do resin casts of it.
Drink up, me hearties!

Jolly Roger Coaster Work in Progress: Part 2
Added the bandana and eye patch. Still needs a lot of cleaning up and adding the final smaller details like the eye patch strap, teeth, and the swords need to be resolved. Also added some preliminary wood-grain texture to the background.
Remember, RUM stands for "reducer of unwelcome misery"®©TM.

Jolly Roger Coaster Work in Progress
Still have a long ways to go.
Took a few hours cleaning and reorganizing my workspace just for this little project. Also finally got some speakers hooked up in there so I can listen to some tunes while I work (where I previously just blasted it from the home theater system in the next room). Music to me is like air. I need it with me at all times whenever possible.
"A pirate's life for me!"
Drink Up Me Hearties!
I long wondered why there are no cool sculpted pirate-themed coasters around, so I'm making my own. Here's the original sculpt in progress next to the concept sketch. The final piece will be cast in resin.
Keep a Weather Eye on the Horizon
Kneaded clay, sculpting tools, clamps... what top-secret project am I up to? All I can say is I'm excited about this one. It's a design I really like and the final piece will become a utilitarian item I can use at home on nights I'm feeling particularly piratey. ;)
Stay tuned!

A Friendly P.S.A.
When I see videos online of propmakers working with liquid resin and other chemicals without gloves or eye protection, it truly makes me cringe. I don't care how much experience you have, or how "professional" or careful you think you are — no project is worth risking injury or a bad case of "plastic finger skin" that will persist for weeks. You get just one small drop of accidentally flicked or splashed resin in your eye it WILL be painful, can cause some serious, sometimes permanent damage and partial or total vision loss depending on where it lands on your eye. Goggles are not expensive, and even dollar store ones can save your precious eyeballs from a really bad accident. Accidents are unexpected. That's why they're called "accidents".
To any fellow mad lab scientists out there, this is my P.S.A., if an accident has the potential to happen, it always pays to take precautions. Your personal safety should always be your first priority. When dealing with potentially hazardous materials or tools: don't wing it, don't improvise. Do things right.

Twin Serpent Guardian Spirit in its Final Glorious Paint
There's an indescribable feeling of fulfillment when I layer in the last bit of paint to complete the desired look of everything I work on. In fact, it's my favorite stage of the propmaking process as the item comes to life and the "illusion" is complete. Here are a few last looks at my Twin Serpent Guardian Spirit wall reliefs, part of my City of the Twin Serpents series of artifacts, before they get boxed up and ready to ship.
